Track and field is underway in Illinois and we have an excellent conference this year. Maybe not as strong as last year when Shelbyville and Tuscola went 3rd and 4th at the IHSA State Finals but still a great year. Both those teams still have amazing talent, Tuscola has amazing distance runners, and Shelbyville has great depth. A young Clinton team is improving quickly looking to make some noise in the conference with some good jumpers. Warrensburg, Central A&M, and Meridian round out the conference. Let’s preview the teams in the order they finished at the conference meet last year and look at how some events may look come conference time.

The 1A state champions in cross country have the most loaded distance squad I've seen, led by seniors Josiah Hortin, Jackson Barrett, Will Foltz, junior Xander Neamtu, and sophomores Blake Mcleese and Boyd Brewer. They'll go to state in as many spots as they are given. Outside of distance they have junior Sawyer Woodard(likely state in discus) and senior Aiden Weaver to pick up the slack from Chris Boyd graduating. Their sprints group isn't too bad led by the Graves brothers, Bryce and Dylan, and Calvin Cook. Hurdler David Hornaday solidifies the squad. The most obvious weakness of the squad is the lack of jumpers, while they have solid long jumpers, they have no high jumpers, triple jumpers, or pole vaulters. With all of this said they are easily the favorite to win the conference. All of the first-place points from distance events and likely a state 4x2 and 4x4, should cause this team to repeat as conference champions. They are most likely looking past this though, looking to bring a plaque home from state. Which they could not do last year, when they were 3rd going into the 4x4 before Shelbyville bumped them down to 4th and took their plaque. This team is the heavy favorite this year for conference and they may even be able to pull off another state championship.

This is usually an amazing team but with Tucker Foil and Tucker Kull not being listed on rosters I've seen they may be entering a sort of rebuilding year. Even with this they still have great athletes and a lot of newcomers coming in. The distance depth they had in cross country was great. Senior Aydan Fisher is the veteran leader of this team with great marks from 200-800. After this they have 4 good sophomores who, if they can develop well, could be stars, Aydan’s younger brother Ayson, Ryne Peavler, hurdler Hadley Smith(likely state in 110mH), and jumper Will Nohren(likely state HJ). Hadley is slated to follow in his brother's footsteps and dominate conference hurdles for years. Junior returner Jack Jokisch is coming back to lead the team in throws. This is also the only team in the conference with notable Pole vaulters. After this they have a huge amount of freshmen coming in who could cause this team to be frontrunners to win the conference in 2-3 years. This includes Jaiden Meister, Owen Beyers, Henry Woolery, Warren Weekly, Jadyn Bruner, and Jonah Bowers, all who have great potential and could contribute this year as well. They likely have a state 4x4 on the way. Shelbyville has an amazing future and a good year could set the tone for years.

It looks like the window may finally be open for this team. They have a lack of depth but a decent amount of good athletes has this team as a dark horse for winning the conference this year and next. Junior Anthony Westbrooks leads this team, he had a troublesome sophomore season dealing with injuries, but if he can stay healthy he leads this team in sprints. The biggest advantage they have is having great jumps, Taylor Anderson in triple, Westbrooks in long, and state qualifier Jack Webb in high jump with a great 6’3” mark. All 3 juniors. Senior Drew Moser leads the distance group, who went to state in cross country, with decent marks from 800 to a state qualifying 3200 time. Juniors Talan Thrasher and Colin Jameson can look to grab some points for them in the 1600 and 3200 respectively, with freshman Justin Droke looking to contribute in the 800. Unfortunately with stars Isaac Webb and Seth Varble graduating their throws are left to Brock Newberry, who was injured last year. This team is desperate for some good conference results and if those are going to come it needs to be this year or next.

3 great sprinters and an amazing thrower is great but that's all this team really has. This group of 4, Ryan Neece, Drew Damery, Hayden Sams, and Hunter White, includes 3 seniors and 1 junior and once they graduate there isn't much hope for this team. Hunter White should make it to state in discus, and if Ryan Neece doesn't make it this year, he likely will next year. Looking towards the future Briston Sims may help after the great distance runners in the conference graduate, and you never know how some young athletes may grow.

This team is highlighted by junior Catrell Lee, with great triple jump marks. Other notable performers include Jake Dominick, Myles Schrimpsher, Andrew Tuttle, Shane Johnson, and Jeuliyan Koehler. Warrensburg has some good young athletes but I don't trust their coaching to develop them. With that said though Warrensburg could pull off some upsets come conference time. I have high hopes for Catrell Lee to make it to state in the triple jump, but no other expectations besides that. The future is pretty bright for this team and we’ll see if this young roster can do something this year. They'll likely need to improve in throws to do this though.

Noah Pritchard(10)-Throws/100: 100-14.9, SP-25’8.75”, Discus-49’0.5”
A very small program highlighted by senior Cooper Greenwood, a talented thrower, senior Caden Ford, with decent discus marks, and junior Kyle Miller, with a 1:03 400. Their 2 throwers will snatch them some points come conference time, but not much notable besides that. they could have some young talent coming in but I have not yet seen a roster for them.
